Matthaus wants Hertha job

Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaus has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Lucien Favre as coach at Hertha Berlin.

Favre was sacked on Monday following Hertha's disastrous start to the Bundesliga season and Matthaus has already thrown his hat into the ring for the job.

The former Rapid Vienna, Atletico Paranaense, Red Bull Salzburg and Hungary coach is currently in charge of Israeli side Maccabi Netanya.

"Berlin is definitely great and I'll wait to see what happens," said Matthaus.

"Hertha has a huge task ahead and I think they will make the right decision.

"I have not yet had any contact with Hertha. My name always crops up when there is speculation."
