Funkel facing Hertha battle

Recently hired Hertha Berlin coach Friedhelm Funkel has admitted that he faces a massive test to turn the club's fortunes around.

A 3-0 loss at Nurnberg made it eight league defeats in a row, a run of losses which had already cost Lucien Favre his job at the Olympiastadion.

Funkel said after the latest reverse: "I never expected it to be so hard.

"The team did not do anything that we had planned. I am immensely disappointed, but this shows that I was right with my assessment.

"What we need now is to work, work, work.

"We played disappointingly and have got to improve 100 per cent, but we certainly won't play like this again in the next few weeks."
