Skibbe to replace Babbel at Hertha

Hertha Berlin could name Michael Skibbe as the successor to sacked coach Markus Babbel as early as Thursday, according to reports in the German media on Monday.

Skibbe, 46, is currently in charge of Turkish side Eskisehirspor, having been sacked by Eintracht Frankfurt in March, but German daily Bild reported that he could sign a contract with Hertha until 2014.

Skibbe became the youngest coach in Bundesliga history when he took over Borussia Dortmund in 1998 at the age of 32.

He spent three years at Bayer Leverkusen between 2005 and 2008, and then spent several months at Turkish giants Galatasaray before joining Frankfurt two years ago.

Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool defender Babbel, 39, was sacked by Hertha on Sunday, despite having led the capital club to promotion from the second division in his first season in charge last term.

Hertha, 11th in the Bundesliga at the season's halfway stage, have not yet announced who will be in the dug-out for the visit of Kaiserslautern in the German Cup last 16 on Wednesday.
