Hereford United was formed in 1924 and began life playing in local leagues. They soon progressed through these and reached the Southern League in 1939. Hereford became known as one of the top teams outside the football league due to reaching the FA Cup first round a amazing 21consecutive seasons before getting elected to the Football League.
In 1971 Hereford made the football world sit up and take notice. They reached the FA Cup third round and were drawn against division one side Newcastle United. Hereford fought out a 2-2 draw at St James Park so the BBC cameras landed in Hereford for the replay. it looked grim when Malcom McDonald put the toon a goal up eight minutes from time but the unthinkable happend and at full time the town of Hereford celebrated as they had conquered Newcastle United 2-1.
Hereford were elected into the football league that summer and then enjoyed a long time in the basement leagues of the football league. 1997 was to be the year Hereford said goodbye to the football league, 25 years after that famous win against Newcastle and being elected to the football league.
They havent enjoyed a succesful spell in the conference until recently where they reached the Playoffs the last two seasons only to narrowly lose out.
