JJ has two similarly named stikers who could vie for a starting place with Kevin Kyle Jim Jefferies believes a confident Calum Elliot will prove a valuable striking option this season - despite decision to sign his namesake. Elliot scored against St Johnstone, expertly glancing home Lee Wallace's cross just before the end of the first half, in the first SPL game of the season. It was the 23-year-old's first Hearts goal since April 2009 and reminded home supporters what he is capable of in the 1-1 draw. While Kevin Kyle and Stephen Elliott were brought in the during the summer to lead the forward line when fully fit, Jefferies has no plans to forget what the other Elliot can provide. Jefferies said: "Calum played well I thought last weekend. He got a goal at Dunfermline and a goal in another closed-door game against Middlesbrough. He did well. Sometimes when it just needs that wee change, you've got people like Kyle and Elliott who can come on. It was no reflection on Calum, because he scored a fantastic goal. It's competition for places which is always a good thing. You've got to remember we didn't have Gary Glen or David Obua (both injured) either, so it's good options." Republic of Ireland international Elliott was so keen to impress his new manager and teammates that he picked up a hamstring injury in a bounce game with East Fife this week. Jefferies is keen see him link up with Kyle, but Calum Elliot could again start at New Douglas Park against Hamilton. The manager went on: "When you step it up and are trying hard to impress, it's always a danger. But we took Stephen off early enough. He looked very sharp when he was on. Kevin will be available, he's just way behind in training. The danger is pushing him, but he will be in the squad. Possibly we can build him up." Meanwhile, Jefferies is still weighing up the option to move for Jonathan Toto, the 20-year-old Cameroon striker who has been on trial and impressed in bounce games. The club are looking into his background and Jefferies said: "Until we get all the paperwork done, nothing can be done. We've got clearance from Metz, where he was as a young boy, but the lad spent a year in Cameroon when his father wasn't well. He played over there too."
