Stevenson heads into Hearts

New Hearts manager Jim Jefferies signed midfielder Ryan Stevenson from Ayr United on transfer deadline day.

Jefferies, who replaced Csaba Laszlo in the Tynecastle hot-seat last week, paid a five-figure fee to land the 25-year-old former Chelsea and St Johnstone player.

Meanwhile, he also sanctioned the departure of fellow midfield Stephen Husband to Blackpool.

"I've always felt Ryan could make the step up," he told the club's official website. "We've had to beat off a number of Premier League clubs to get his services, but there's no huge fee.

"The midfielders are all capable of working hard, closing people down, but I feel he's got the instinct to support the front people," said the Hearts boss.

"He packs a good strike, physical strength and he has got good skill."
