Hearts manager Jim Jefferies insists the possibility of introducing title play-offs in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League should not be dismissed despite opposition from the Old Firm.
The Jambos boss - whose side currently sit third in the SPL - believes the proposal would be welcomed by the rest of the clubs in the SPL, although Walter Smith and Neil Lennon are both against the idea. The plans could be on the agenda when all 12 top-flight clubs meet to discuss radical reforms in Scottish football early in the new year.
Jefferies told Hearts News: "I think it happens a lot in rugby league and union, both in England and Scotland, and it certainly gives a better chance of someone else winning the league as it comes down to a cup-tie on the day. If it means more interest and excitement - which would undoubtedly be the case at the top of the league - then it is worth looking at."
He continued: "It would be a radical change and a major overhaul but that doesn't mean the idea should be dismissed. I can see arguments on both sides.
"Rangers and Celtic invariably win the league with a bit of a gap to third place and they might feel a bit aggrieved.
"But if everybody agrees to it and they know the score before starting the campaign then fine.
"If they are good enough to finish 20 points clear of a team in third, for example, they should be good enough to win the play-offs but sometimes that's not the case.
"I'm sure every other club outside the Old Firm would be interested as it gives them a chance of the league title.
"Facts prove it is very difficult to separate the Old Firm as they are massive clubs with huge resources and that is the challenge we are all facing.
"I don't think anyone outside the Old Firm would disagree that play-offs at the top of the league would be a good idea as it improves the chances of winning the league."
