Jefferies nearly substituted matchwinner

Hearts manager Jim Jefferies admitted he was about to replace David Templeton before the winger emerged as the matchwinner to defeat St Mirren in Paisley. Jefferies was prepared to make the substitution after feeling Templeton was struggling to make an impact on the game in the first hour. He was made to rapidly change his plans, however, when Templeton first put Hearts ahead with a brilliant individual strike then produced the run that saw John Potter red-carded for a foul on him with Kevin Kyle slotting in the resulting penalty. Jefferies said: "I was going to take him off, but decided to give him another few minutes before doing so and I'm glad I did. "David wasn't having the best of nights, he knows that himself. That's why I switched him to the right flank in the first half to try and get him going. "He didn't start the second half well either and thought about bringing Arvydas Novikovas on, but thankfully we kept David on and he produced a match-winning performance. He knows he can do better, but you can't expect that laddie to play well every week, it'll just make him more determined on Saturday against Hibs to go and put that right."
