Hearts' hopes of securing Europa League football were effectively ended after battling out a goalless home draw with Dundee United.
In a hard-fought contest, clear-cut chances were at a premium and, despite a late surge by the home side, they could not find the elusive goal.
Even if Hearts close the three point gap on fifth placed Hibs in Sunday's final game of the season against Celtic, they have an 11-goal difference to make up on their city rivals.
