Gers narrow gap on Celtic

Kyle Lafferty grabbed the only goal of the game as Rangers avenged last month's defeat to Hearts with a win over the Edinburgh side in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League at Ibrox. Lafferty pounced in the opening minutes before El-Hadji Diouf was handed an earlier than anticipated debut following his transfer deadline-day move. The win allowed Rangers to move to within five points of SPL leaders Celtic, with two games in hands over their rivals. Rangers enjoyed the best possible start to the game when they took the lead with just four minutes on the clock. Steven Whittaker flighted a cross into the box where Lafferty was waiting to volley past the helpless Marian Kello from 15 yards. Lee McCulloch then saw his header flash wide of the upright after collecting a long ball from Madjid Bougherra. Hearts could have been back on level terms when Craig Thomson's free-kick was met by Marius Zaliukas at the back post and his header appeared netbound before Allan McGregor produced a superb save to tip over.
