Midfielder Antony Sweeney has pledged his immediate future to Hartlepool United by signing a new long-term contract.

The versatile 24-year-old's current deal was set to run out next summer, but he has now penned a deal covering at least the next two years.

Sweeney told the club's official website: "First and foremost as a footballer you want to be playing football regularly, so that was the main thing really.

"Recently the manager has shown that I'm still in his plans and has said so in various press reports, so that's good enough for me.

"I'm delighted to get the new contract signed and sealed, now I can just concentrate on the next couple of years and helping the club progress again."

Sweeney has scored 29 goals in nearly 200 appearances for Pools to date.
