Pools have lost their last five games and are now just one point above the drop zone in League One going into the clash with the second-bottom Bulls.
Porter told the Hartlepool Mail: "If you look at it there's 18 points up for grabs so we can lose it (against Hereford) and win the next five.
"But realistically, if we lose this game, that's looking a 100 miles away.
"The players know the importance of this game and we're just hoping we can
get the fans to understand the importance of their backing behind us.
"If we can get them down here and get them right behind us, we can come away with three points."
