Three goals in the opening 23 minutes set Sheffield Wednesday on their way to a comfortable 5-0 win at Hartlepool and into top spot in League One. Neil Mellor was instrumental in the victory, scoring one and creating two as Wednesday ran riot. Joe Gamble had already cleared off the line by the time Mellor raced away on the counter attack on eight minutes. His square ball was intended for Marcus Tudgay, but midfielder Paul Murray swept the ball into his own net from eight yards. Two minutes later the lead was doubled. Tudgay raced down the right, Mellor picked up the loose ball and passed for Giles Coke to sidefoot home. On 23 minutes Wednesday added to their lead with a sublime Mellor finish. He took a defence-splitting pass from Darren Potter and drilled his finish across Scott Flinders. Goal number four arrived on 72 minutes. Mellor was brought down by Flinders as he went around the goalkeeper and Tudgay slotted in from the penalty spot. And Clinton Morrison completed the rout in injury time, curling into the top corner from 25 yards.
