Pools boss backing United striker

Mackay, who arrived at the club from Consett, signed a new contract at Victoria Park on Thursday despite many observers feeling he was not up to the required standard for League football. However, Turner has faith in the forward and reckons he could end up a fans' favourite like Eifion Williams - who had a similar background to Mackay when he joined Pools. Turner told the Hartlepool Mail: "I've got some ideas on how to progress Michael Mackay. I feel there's something in there that's not quite come out yet or been utilised. "When I signed Eifion Williams, the Torquay manager was Roy McFarland. Roy went on record and said 'Chris Turner has bought Eifion Williams for £30,000 to score goals. He couldn't score goals here and I can't see him scoring goals there'. "I got something out of Eifion Williams that Roy McFarland couldn't get and what a servant Eifion was."
