Lee Hughes scored his 14th goal of the season as Oldham, unbeaten in 10 games, rose to third by beating Hartlepool. When Neal Eardley crossed, Michael Nelson made a mess of a clearance and Hughes poked home from six yards. On-loan Latics debutant Dean Windass hit the woodwork with a free-kick before Kevin Maher crossed for Deane Smalley to volley a second for Oldham. Hartlepool rarely threatened but Kelvin Lomax's own goal from an attempted clearance ensured a tight finish.
