The 21-year-old, brought in from Sunderland during the summer, was expected to be used in the centre of Pools' defence - a position he had become accustomed to in the Black Cats' reserves.[LNB]However, director of sport Chris Turner failed to bring in a recognised left-back and Hartley has been asked to deputise.[LNB]Hartley told the Hartlepool Mail: "I say I'm not really a left-back but I'm getting better every game. There are still areas of my game that I need to work on at left-back but that will come - I'm only 21.[LNB]"I never played left-back at youth-team level and only once or twice under Neil Bailey (former Sunderland reserves coach). But it was only really when he needed me to play there - I was always there as a centre-back.[LNB]"When I made my debut for the first team it was at left-back but I was only 18. I started at centre-back at Chesterfield but then left-back Gregor Robertson got a thigh strain."[LNB][LNB]
