Rhys Oates doubtful as Hartlepool host Portsmouth

Striker Rhys Oates remains an injury concern for Hartlepool's home clash with automatic-promotion hopefuls Portsmouth.

Oates was initially named on the bench for last weekend's defeat at Blackpool following a thigh strain but felt a recurrence in the pre-match warm-up and was not involved.

Carl Magnay has an outside chance of making the bench following a six-month absence with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Goalkeeper Trevor Carson (shoulder) and skipper Billy Paynter (Achilles) will not play again this season.

Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess is in line to return ahead of the trip.

Burgess missed the Blues' 2-1 victory over strugglers Newport last weekend through suspension but the 25-year-old is available for Paul Cook's side.

Curtis Main (knee) and Jack Whatmough (hamstring) are unavailable for the game.

A win could see Portsmouth close the gap on second-placed Plymouth to four points in the Sky Bet League Two table.
