Pools late show sinks Minstermen

Two late goals settled a drab game to earn Hartlepool a 2-0 win over York.

Luke James and substitute Jack Barmby proved the difference to earn Pools a first win of 2014 and inflict a first defeat of the year on the Minstermen.

In truth, neither side looked capable of breaking the deadlock until James struck after 82 minutes.

Jack Baldwin knocked the ball down for James to crack in a low shot from the edge of the area for his 11th goal of the season.

And in the final minute, shortly after his introduction, Barmby struck. Signed on loan from Manchester United, the son of ex-England international Nicky, curled a fine effort high into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

York could have taken the lead just before Pools edged ahead. Home goalkeeper Scott Flinders dropped a high cross and defender Keith Lowe got under the ball and somehow managed to lift it high over the crossbar from six yards out.

Andy Monkhouse volleyed wide for Pools as half-time approached and not long after the break, striker Wes Fletcher was twice denied in a scramble by Flinders.
