Hartlepool tame the Shrews

Charlie Wyke and Brad Walker condemned Shrewsbury to a first Sky Bet League Two loss of the campaign as Hartlepool won 2-0.

Wyke, on loan from Middlesbrough, put Colin Cooper's men ahead after just five minutes before Walker sealed Pools' first home win of the campaign late on.

Hartlepool spurned an early chance when Wyke hit narrowly wide with the goal gaping.

He soon made amends, however, sliding home with his left foot after being picked out by a Jack Compton pull-back.

The chances did not stop there as Wyke and Compton both threatened.

But Ryan Woods impressed for the Shrews, almost creating an equaliser when Scott Vernon headed his centre just wide.

Shrewsbury emerged from the break with plenty of endeavour, epitomised by James Collins twice narrowly missing the target.

But the better work was still coming from the hosts, who sealed the points when a superb counter-attack ended with Walker sliding home Compton's pin-point cross.
