Jack Marriott double steers Luton to big win at Hartlepool

Substitute Jack Marriott struck a double as Luton grabbed a 4-1 Sky Bet League Two win over Hartlepool.

Marriott, introduced in the first half when Craig Mackail-Smith suffered a leg injury, netted in between efforts from Jonathan Smith and Ollie Lee.

Hartlepool bossed the opening period, yet found themselves behind as Smith netted amid Rakish Bingham missing two glorious chances.

Luke Guttridge was afforded too much space and, after his effort was kept out by Adam Bartlett, Smith converted.

Hartlepool deservedly entered the break on level terms, Billy Paynter powering a back-post diving header beyond Mark Tyler from Rhys Oates' centre.

Yet Marriott took the game away from Ronnie Moore's men with two goals in four second-half minutes.

Luke Wilkinson's headed clearance somehow evaded Pools' defenders allowing the striker to race clear and finish.

He was in the right place again in the 57th minute when sliding home from Guttridge's low cross.

Hartlepool were dominant for the remainder of the game, with Bingham somehow missing another three one-on-ones, yet conceded another when Lee curled in a 25-yard injury-time stunner.
