Spireites boost promotion hopes

Chesterfield strengthened their grip on the promotion places with a 2-1 win at Hartlepool.

As the Spireites were winning at Victoria Park, fourth-placed Fleetwood dropped points against Morecambe to leave Paul Cook's side with a five-point advantage over the play-off zone and ensure a spot in the play-offs at the very least.

But they had to come from behind to earn their ninth away win of the season.

Pools, who have now lost five games in a row, took the lead in the 25th minute. Jack Barmby's pass fed Luke James in behind left-back Nathan Smith and the striker neatly curled in his 16th goal of the season from inside the penalty area.

The lead, however, lasted just five minutes.

A Dan Gardner corner landed in the six-yard area and centre-half Liam Cooper was on hand to knock the ball over the line.

The Spireites scored what proved to be the winner four minutes into the second half.

A crossfield ball from Marc Richards found Eoin Doyle at the far side of the penalty area and he cut inside before angling a deft chip over keeper Andy Rafferty and high into the net.

The visitors saw the game out comfortably and could have added to their lead, but substitute Armand Gnanduillet's low, angled shot was well saved by Rafferty.
