Spireites live to fight another day

Chesterfield striker Jordan Bowery threw his side a relegation lifeline as his second-half header clinched a 2-1 win at Hartlepool.

The Spireites could have gone down and looked set for the drop when they trailed to Gary Liddle's 37th-minute opener for Pools, but a second-half turnaround has given John Sheridan's side a glimmer of hope - seven points from safety with nine to play for.

Pools had not scored in almost five full games at Victoria Park, but Liddle broke their duck when he turned home Ryan Noble's cross for their first goal at home since March 3.

Neale Cooper's side had chances for a second, but Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee saved smartly from Andy Monkhouse and Noble.

But the introduction of substitute Danny Whitaker turned the game around for the visitors. He took a pass from Bowery and drilled an angled drive into the corner of the net from 18 yards to level in the 59th minute.

Eleven minutes later Bowery peeled into space in the penalty area to meet Scott Boden's cross and put the visitors ahead for a lead they comfortably held on to.
