Scott Fenwick strike earns Hartlepool a vital victory

Scott Fenwick scored the only goal as struggling Hartlepool collected a crucial Sky Bet League Two win over promotion-chasing Wycombe.

Fenwick struck in the 33rd minute to earn victory at Victoria Park as Pools moved six points clear of the drop zone.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the early possession, only to almost fall behind when Sam Wood curled narrowly wide.

It appeared a lack of cutting edge would cost Pools until a moment of real quality from debutant Nathan Thomas teed-up the opener.

The left winger showed a great turn of pace to beat Jason McCarthy before sending in a superb cross that Fenwick side-footed home.

Ronnie Moore's men quickly picked up where they left off after the break, with goalkeeper Matt Ingram producing an impressive stop to keep out Jordan Richards' 20-yard free-kick.

Michael Woods missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 on the hour and Pools' profligacy was nearly punished when Aaron Pierre forced goalkeeper Trevor Carson into a stunning save.

A nervy finale ensued as Wycombe pressed forward in numbers, but Gareth Ainsworth's men remain in sixth place as Hartlepool saw the game out.
