Improving Grimsby take their chance to see off Hartlepool

Grimsby's revival under new boss Marcus Bignot gained further momentum with a 1-0 win at Hartlepool.

The Mariners won at Carlisle last week and this made it 10 points from a possible 12.

Pools had the game's first chance after five minutes as new loan signing Sean Kavanagh rolled a pass across the six-yard area which was just out of reach of skipper Billy Paynter.

The home side should have had a penalty in the 17th minute when Omar Bogle handled in the area, but referee Darren Drysdale was having none of it.

Padraig Amond, who netted 39 times for the Mariners last season before signing for Pools in the summer, took an early chance on the volley but goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved well.

The loanee from Manchester United was safe and sound all afternoon, comfortably dealing with everything thrown at him.

Adi Yussuf, signed last week from Mansfield, netted the only goal after 34 minutes as he latched on to Craig Disley's slide-rule pass and got goal side of the defence to fire low into the bottom corner.

It was the Mariners' only shot on goal.

Pools had plenty of possession but were always let down by their final ball and their best chance came when Paynter had an effort cleared off the line by Shaun Pearson.
