Sears snatches point for Us

Freddie Sears' first goal in more than a year rescued Colchester a point against Hartlepool in a 1-1 draw.

Sears scored from the spot to secure the Us their seventh draw in eight matches.

Hartlepool took a 17th-minute lead when Antony Sweeney climbed to head Evan Horwood's deep cross past Ben Williams from close range.

Pools came close to scoring again shortly afterwards when Ryan Noble narrowly failed to connect with Gary Liddle's teasing cross into the area.

Noble then headed over but Colchester warmed to the task just before half-time and Michael Rose's free-kick forced goalkeeper Scott Flinders to push the ball past a post.

Colchester midfielder Anthony Wordsworth hacked Liddle's goalbound shot away, before going close with a first-time effort that Flinders saved.

But the Us equalised with nine minutes remaining through Sears, who scored the first goal of his Colchester loan spell after substitute Gavin Massey had been tripped by Paul Murray in the area.
