Spireites go down fighting

Chesterfield slumped to a fifth straight league defeat when Hartlepool ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win at the B2net Stadium.

Leon Clarke gave Chesterfield an early lead with his 50th league goal, but Paul Murray and a James Poole double put Hartlepool in control before Dean Holden pulled on back.

Chesterfield started positively when Alex Mendy stepped over a low cross and Clarke bent a left-footed shot into the corner in the 10th minute.

But a poor punch by Greg Fleming, who came on when Tommy Lee was injured in the warm-up, allowed Murray to loop a header into the net in the 17th minute and two minutes later James Poole beat the stand-in goalkeeper with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

Fleming did well to push a 35-yard shot from Andy Monkhouse over, but was beaten three minutes into the second half when Poole headed in Evan Horwood's cross.

Chesterfield responded three minutes later when Holden turned in a deflected shot and although Clarke netted in stoppage time, the flag had already gone up for offside.
