Pools punish Shakers

Hartlepool put a 5-0 drubbing at relegation-threatened Wycombe firmly behind them to claim an impressive 2-1 win at Bury.

Ritchie Humphreys and Adam Boyd scored to condemn Bury to a seventh consecutive game without a win despite David Worrall's late consolation.

Bury owed a debt of gratitude to Trevor Carson during the first half, the on-loan Sunderland keeper reacting sharply to keep out a Peter Hartley header.

Carson also tipped a powerful drive from Andy Monkhouse over the top while Scott Flinders stood firm to thwart a Worrall volley at the other end.

But Hartlepool surged in front when Humphreys met Neil Austin's cross with a glancing header that left Carson helpless.

Steve Schumacher wasted a good position for the hosts just after the break and Bury paid the price, Boyd slamming home after Monkhouse flicked on Evan Horwood's long free-kick.

Worrall lifted a delicate lob over the onrushing Flinders to reduce the deficit but the Shakers had two late penalty appeals ignored as their efforts came to nothing.
