Moving ceremony for Enke
16 Nov 2009 - 07:53:51
Fans in their thousands descended upon Hannover's AWD-Arena to mourn the loss of their goalkeeper Robert Enke.
The 32-year-old died on Tuesday evening in an apparent suicide following a battle with depression.
He had struggled to overcome the condition following the death of his two-year-old daughter Lara, who died in 2006 from a heart condition.
Speaking to reporters, club president Martin Kind said: "Robert Enke will never come back to this stadium, the place where he conquered our hearts."
Governor of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff, added: "We don't need flawless robots. We need human beings with rough edges, with all their weaknesses and wonderful qualities.
"We can only guess how big the pressure was that weighed on him."
