Wolfsburg striker Obafemi Martins has been ruled out until the New Year due to a shin injury which requires surgery.
The 25-year-old Nigeria international, who joined the German champions in the summer from Newcastle United, had hoped to delay an operation until the mid-season Bundesliga break, but his left shin has proved too painful to carry on.
Head coach Armin Veh confirmed: "He is suffering a lot from the injury and the pain has become strong. There is no way around an operation now."
Martins has scored four times in 14 league and European outings for Wolfsburg this season, although he has failed to find the net in the Champions League
Meanwhile, the widow of former Hannover and Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke has thanked the public for their support following her husband's suicide earlier this month.
Teresa Enke wrote a piece in Hannover's matchday programme for the Bundesliga clash with Bayern Munich expressing her gratitude for the sympathy and support that she has received.
She wrote: "During the hard hours of mourning I was able to experience once again how much sympathy, recognition and respect Robert had earned.
"Words actually fail me to describe the enormous sympathy shown following the death of my husband.
"I have often wished in recent days that he had known about how much you valued him."
