Hannover appoint Slomka
20 Jan 2010 - 07:18:34
Bundesliga strugglers Hannover have appointed Mirko Slomka as their new head coach, following the sacking of Andreas Bergmann.
Forty-two-year-old Slomka made his name during a spell in charge of Schalke which came to an end in April 2008, while he has also had a previous stint on the staff at Hannover as part of Ralf Rangnick's backroom staff.
Hannover's sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, said: "We are convinced that Mirko Slomka will avoid relegation with our team. Furthermore, he should develop the Hannover team of the future.
"After three consecutive defeats and a negative run which has now stretched to seven matches without a win, the management no longer had the feeling that Andreas Bergmann could give the team the necessary impulse to remain in the Bundesliga."
Slomka himself added: "I am looking forward to the challenge and am convinced that we will make quick progress upwards.
"The team and I have got to get used to each other quickly and start picking up points immediately."
