Trap upbeat over McCarthy

Hamilton Academical's teenage ace James McCarthy is at the centre of an international tug-of-war.

The 17-year-old midfielder has already played at Under-21s level for the Republic of Ireland, but Scotland remain hopeful of tempting McCarthy to turn out for them at senior level.

Republic head coach Giovanni Trapattoni told the Irish Sun: "We will see if he is Irish or Scottish, but I think he will play for Ireland.

"I haven't spoken to him yet myself, but I will speak to him soon. I know he has two possibilities, Scotland and Ireland.

"I think he will choose Ireland and maybe he will play in the next friendly."

McCarthy already has more than 70 appearances for the Accies to his name, having helped the club gain promotion to the SPL last season.
