Martin Canning wants Hamilton side to focus on Morton

Hamilton boss Martin Canning has told his team to forget about their impressive draw with Rangers on Saturday.

The Accies player-manager was proud of the way his side battled to a shock point against Mark Warburton's Ladbrokes Premiership title hopefuls on the opening day of the league campaign.

But he is worried his players could take their eye off the ball on Tuesday when they face Morton in the last 16 of the Betfred Cup by spending too much time savouring their 1-1 Ibrox draw.

Canning said: "That result at Ibrox will do a lot for our confidence but the one thing I learned last season is that you have got to try and block it out.

"Regardless of how you have done previously the next game will take care of itself, because it's a brand new 90 minutes and a totally different opposition.

"I understand people talking about momentum but I think it is important that you can block it out and just look at things one game at a time. When you start looking too far ahead, that's when you slip up.

"We have got to make sure we totally focus and prepare properly for Morton, so as far as I'm concerned Saturday is forgotten about.

"Hopefully the boys can take belief from drawing with Rangers but as for anything else, that is it done."

Championship outfit Morton claimed their place in the knock-out rounds after an unbeaten run through their group stage fixtures.

Among those results was a thoroughly-deserved win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, and Canning believes Jim Duffy's Ton will head to the SuperSeal Stadium looking to claim another top-flight scalp.

He said: "Morton are a good side. We have had them watched against St Mirren on Saturday and we will go over the tapes to make sure we know their threats.

"They had a good result down at Kilmarnock a couple of weeks back and I'm sure they will be looking to cause another upset on Tuesday."

Conor Pepper misses out for Morton with a knee injury.
