Jol takes up Ajax position
26 May 2009 - 17:46:20
Hamburg coach Martin Jol has left the club to return to the Netherlands to take charge of Ajax on a three-year contract.
The 53-year-old had only been in charge of the Bundesliga club for one season, but has jumped at the chance to succeed Marco van Basten in Amsterdam.
Ajax chief executive, Rik van den Boog, told the club's official website: "It is the most important position within a football club, so we acted very carefully.
"Martin has all the qualities that the new coach of Ajax should have in our opinion.
"He is experienced and has gained that experience both in Holland and abroad. He has worked for big and not so big clubs and has shown he can get the maximum out of his players.
"He is furthermore a coach who has proven that he is willing to give talented young players a chance, which is of the utmost importance for us."
