Jol: Hamburg are contenders

Hamburg coach Martin Jol has rejected suggestions that his side are not genuine title challengers and are only making up the numbers at the top of the Bundesliga.

The Dutch coach has led the club to second place behind Hertha Berlin with nine games to go, while they are one of the favourites to win the UEFA Cup after reaching the last eight.

Despite their success so far this season Jol's side are yet to convince some observers, but the former Tottenham manager believes they are genuine title contenders.

He said: "Of course we can win the league.

"We are still level with second place. We have won eight of our last 11 games, but things could have gone differently. There is a very thin dividing line."

Meanwhile, Jol has admitted he would be interested in extending his contract at the HSH Nordbank Arena.

He added: "If HSV say to me they want to keep going with me for three, four more years, then I am in."
