Hamburg have confirmed that they have rejected an offer from Real Madrid for Dutch playmaker Rafael van der Vaart.
The 25-year-old is being lined up for a big-money move to the Bernabeu, but Hamburg have rejected an initial offer from the reigning Spanish champions.
Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer confirmed: "The offer was absolutely unacceptable. We immediately gave them our answer, which was no."
Van der Vaart had earlier spoken of interest from Real, but explained that he is more than happy to remain with Hamburg at the present time.
He said: "This time of year is always rife with speculation, but that doesn't change how I feel.
"Following the rumours about Real Madrid's interest, I got loads of phone calls, but there's is no deal.
"As I've said on numerous occasions, I'm happy to stay at Hamburg. I'm comfortable here and expect to play here next season as well.
"I'm only leaving if there is serious interest from an absolutely top team."
