The club was formed in 1911, and were one of the founder members of Football League Third Division North in 1921, and remained in that division until restructuring in 1958.
By the late 1980s they had become stuck in the lower reaches of the Fourth Division, and were relegated to the Conference in 1993. several poor seasons followed and it seemed as if Halifax Town were heading into the depths of non-league footbal but against all odds, they won promotion back to the League in 1998 were the enjoyed four seasons of third division football, only to be relegated again in 2002.
As of 2005, they are the only club to have been relegated to the Conference twice.
