Grimsby Town defender Nick Fenton has been hurt by being told that he can leave the club this summer, despite being a first-team regular throughout the season just ended.
The 28-year-old centre-half still has another year of his current contract left at Blundell Park, but has been told by boss Alan Buckley that he can move on.
Fenton told the Evening Telegraph: "I was hugely disappointed to be told I could look for another club, I honestly didn't see it coming at all.
"I know we haven't ended the season well but I personally felt I had done okay this season on the whole. I made 50 starts, so I must have been doing something right.
"Then, when the manager told me I wasn't at the forefront of his plans last week, it hurt.
"I still have a year left on my contract and feel I still have a lot to offer the club, but the manager obviously has other ideas."
