Mariners stand firm on Bennett
16 Jun 2009 - 12:24:31
Grimsby Town have opted to reject the latest bid from Peterborough United for Ryan Bennett.
Championship new boys Peterborough have been courting the defender for some time and have already had one offer rejected.
However, a second bid which Posh director of football Barry Fry regarded as generous is also to be resisted.
Grimsby chairman John Fenty confirmed that manager Mike Newell directed his club to decline Peterborough's offer.
He told the club's official website:"It does appear that we'll be rejecting Peterborough's offer for Ryan later today.
"It's a good offer and an offer which would potentially set a record for this division. Having said that, there's been a whole host of interest from other clubs - two clubs from a very high level.
"The manager, who's influencing our thinking on this matter, has suggested that this isn't the best time to be letting Ryan go.
"Potentially it would be in Ryan's interest and the football club's interest to defer this offer at this moment in time."
