Mariners snare Widdowson

Defender Joe Widdowson has joined Grimsby Town on a permanent basis from West Ham United.

The 20-year-old impressed while on loan with the Mariners over the last few months and has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Blundell Park.

Boss Mike Newell told the Evening Telegraph: "Joe has done really well for us and I'm pleased he's agreed to join. It was always in our plans to make him an offer.

"I think he sees himself progressing the way we hope he will do. I think the chairman recognises the potential in a lad of 20 years old too and that's why it's a long-term deal.

"He is athletic and will only get better as he learns the game and gets more games under his belt."
