Mariners land young Hammer

Grimsby Town have brought in 19-year-old defender Joe Widdowson on a one-month loan from West Ham United.

The youngster has previously enjoyed spells on loan with Carlisle United and League Two rivals Rotherham United, both during last season.

Widdowson had his eyes on the Hammers first team after being involved in their pre-season tour of America, but has been unable to force his way into competitive action.

The Mariners will hope his hunger will work in their favour as they are likely to introduce him to the side this week in place of the injured Tom Newey.

They face Barnet on Saturday in a vital relegation clash - Grimsby lie one place below their opponents in 22nd, with five points separating the two sides.
