Mariners eye Bennett stay

Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell is hopeful that his club can ward off interest from a number of higher division outfits in defender Ryan Bennett.

The 19-year-old has already made more than 100 appearances for the Mariners and was the subject of an enquiry from Peterborough United.

Newell told the club's official website: "We won't stand in his way when the time is right. He's a mature lad and he's got his head in the right place.

"He won't be swayed by the people who are trying to influence him at the moment.

"Some of them wouldn't know one end of the pitch from the other and are only interested in one thing. He will keep progressing and his value will keep going up."
