Grimsby Town boss Alan Buckley has handed a one-month contract to trialist Nathan Jarman.
The 21-year-old former Barnsley striker has been training with the Mariners since pre-season.
Buckley said: "He's done absolutely marvellously well when you look at the roly-poly lad that came here six to eight weeks ago.
"He had no definition in his face, no definition in his body - but he'd got some talent. It's only in the last two or three days that we've been able to assess him as a player.
"I could see that he had a good appreciation of the game but the lad has never been fit enough to do himself justice."
Jarman made 19 appearances for the Tykes but was released by the Championship club at the end of last season.
