Former Torquay and Cambridge United defender Stevland Angus is currently training with the Grimsby Town squad in an attempt to earn a contract at Blundell Park.
The 26-year-old was released by the Gulls at the end of last term following their relegation from League Two.
"Stev is training with us but it's no more than that at the minute," Mariners boss Alan Buckley told the club's official website.
"I'm pleased to have the chance to have a look at him.
"I remember when we played at Torquay last season that he impressed at the back - he did well against us that night."
Meanwhile, Gary Harkins is currently training with Partick Thistle after failing to impress Buckley last term.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who still has one year left on his contract, made only 13 starts for the League Two side last season.
