Bennett commits to Mariners

Grimsby Town captain Ryan Bennett has put an end to speculation about his future by agreeing a new four-year deal at Blundell Park.

The 19-year-old defender has been linked with a transfer to Peterborough United for much of the summer but is pleased to have committed his long-term future to the Mariners.

"It's good to get things done and sign a new deal," he told the Evening Telegraph.

"Throughout the summer there's been a lot of speculation. Everyone will have read what's been said through the papers but I haven't said anything.

"It's nice to now be able to come out and say what I want to say and let everybody know that I've signed a new contract. That's what I always intended to do.

"We sorted it all out on Monday and it's a four-year deal. I couldn't be happier. The terms are improved and it suited both myself and the club so it's worked out well.

"Grimsby are the team that gave me my chance and I want to stay here and repay the club for that."
