Sweeney hails Newell's bravery

The Mariners picked up their first away win of the season at Plainmoor thanks to a 30-yard free-kick from Sweeney and a Kevin Nicholson own goal after a first-half stalemate. Sweeney believes the half-time introduction of Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Peter Bore was the catalyst behind the win, and he hailed his manager for being brave enough to make the attacking changes at such an early stage. "You know what the manager's going for when he brings on two attacking players like Pete and Jean-Louis and that spreads through the team," Sweeney told the Grimsby Telegraph. "You think the manager fancies us to win this game and it gives everyone confidence. I think that showed in the second-half and he got his reward for it with the win. "Coming out we had fresh legs in the second-half and we really backed ourselves to win it."
