Newell upbeat despite cup defeat

Town lost their opening League Two fixture 2-1 at Cheltenham at the weekend and were beaten 4-0 by Tranmere in the first round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night. Newell was left to rue the closing stages of the first-half against Rovers as "naive" defending all-but ended his side's hopes at Prenton Park. "For half an hour we had a hold of the game, everyone could see that," said Newell. "But within 10 minutes we had given it away completely and it was very frustrating. "The 3-0 half-time scoreline completely flattered Tranmere and we were up against it. We could have got back in it in the first 15 minutes after the break but enjoyed little luck in front of goal. "Our players know they gave away bad goals and the penalty came from a naive tackle, but we must not be too downhearted. It would be easy to panic but that is not going to happen after just two games."
