Newell relieved after Mariners win

The Mariners had lost their three opening League Two games while losing 4-0 at Tranmere in the Carling Cup. But they hung on after Barry Conlon headed home Danny North's cross after 20 minutes to clinch a hard-fought victory. "Four defeats on the bounce is bad at any time but four defeats in 10 days is not what you're after so it was vitally important we got something here," said Newell. "North did brilliant to stand it up for the goal, and Barry couldn't miss to be honest. "We didn't really create much else, and we know we didn't play that well, but we got the result and it's good to be off and running because it's been a real bad couple of weeks for us."
