Newell angered by match officials

Rochdale moved into second place courtesy of two early goals from Adam Rundle and Adam Le Fondre. But the real talking point came when former Blackburn team-mates Newell and Hill clashed over Dale's second goal, which the former believed was clearly offside. "We felt the second goal was offside and I asked the referee about it at half-time in quite a calm manner," said Newell. "He said he'd take a look at it, but then I'm confronted by Hilly in the tunnel telling me it was onside. "We're both very passionate about the game and we're only human - but the referee has sent me to the stands for the second half and told Hilly he must remain in the stands because we had both adopted aggressive behaviour. We had a disagreement in the corridor, that's all. "The officials have too much power these days, they don't understand the passion of football. "The idiots who make the rules just don't understand the game and the fact they are discussing 20 minute half-time breaks this weekend and whether or not to allow players to put tape on their socks just about sums them up."
