Mariners hand trial to Smith
Newell is keen to bolster his strikeforce ahead of the forthcoming League Two campaign and the 28-year-old becomes the second forward to be handed a trial by the club this month, following Swansea youngster Chris Jones.
Smith started his career at Northern Ireland side Ballyclare before signing for Sheffield United in 1999.
He has also had spells in England with Bury, Preston, Stockport, Cheltenham and Bristol City.
