Mariners boss eyes Sweeney return
Sweeney, 24, impressed in an eight-game loan spell from Leeds at the end of the 2008/09 campaign.
And Newell is confident Sweeney, who has a year left on his deal at Elland Road, could rejoin the Mariners.
He told the club's official website: "I've spoken to Sweens a few times and had a chat with him earlier this week, and he has not ruled anything out.
"Obviously midfield is a priority and Peter Sweeney is certainly a player we would like to bring in."
